Coin books range from lists of what was minted along with prices to specialty books on particular coins or coin groups, such as error coins.  There currentl is an abundance of books on the market.  Just follow the link and see the books available, most of which are current editions.

Of course the popular Red Book is still what most collectors demand for general purposes.

Starting a Coin Collection

Starting a coin collection is easy, start by checking the change you get.  Once you find something unusual, even if it is not valuable, you have a good chance of becoming a coin collector, called a numismatist.  And, if you tire of the hobby, you can simply spend it.

The saving of one each of each year and mint mark from the change you find is also no risk.  And, replacing coins with coins from the same year and mint with better ones still risks nothing.

Of course, most people get very little change, especially in the time of credit cards, so you would move on to getting change from a bank.  Getting rolls of change from a bank you normally do business, opening and checking them, and increasing your collection costs nothing but time, and an occasional trip to get more coins from he bank.  And you may have to look around for a bank equipped to accept the checked coins.

The first purchase you make should be a Coin Book, so you will know if you find a valuable coin.

Ancient Coin Collecting Reference Books

If you collect ancient coins it would be natural that you would have a reference book.  But, just like modern coins, there are simply too many to include in a single volume.  First, you must decide which coins are of interest, ancient Roman Provincial, Ancient Roman Imperial, Ancient Greek, Ancient Chinese, ancient Celtic, or others.

And, if you collect a wide range, consider a group of books, each with a different focus.

Australian Coin Book

Finding coin information and prices for Australian coins was, at first, rather difficult.  After searching and finding a problem with locating an Australian coin guide on Amazon, we finally found Australian Coins and Banknotes.  The author is Greg McDonald.  Now, the 2013 20th edition is available.

This is an excellent book, and covers Australian coins from before Australia minted its first coins.  It covers both Perth Mint and Royal Australian Mint coins that are legal tender of Australia.  It does not cover coins of island nations, nor the Hutt River Province coins and banknotes, since Hutt River Province claims to being independed of Australia are not recognized.

Unfortunately, Amazon had only earlier editions when we checked.  So, where can one get this great book.

Morgan Silver Dollars

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most highly coins in American numismatics.  The coins were minted at Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City.  To properly collect Morgans, a reference book showing details not ordinarily provided by other coin books is a must.  Look for key and semi-key dates, and die varieties.  Some rare coins are identified by specific markings from a die, such as a filled obscure cavity, and this could be the difference in a genuine piece or an altered piece.
