Flowing Hair Dollar and Draped Bust Dollar

The first silver dollar, the Flowing Hair Dollar, was initially minted in 1794 his dollar depicted Liberty with flowing hair on the obverse, and an eagle on the reverse. Both Liberty and the eagle changed over time. In 1795 the dollar became the Draped Bust Dollar, and in 1798 a shield was added to the eagle.

Trade Dollars

The Trade Dollars were not intended to circulate in the United States.  They were intended to be used for payment to the Orient, and differed from circulating dollars by containing slightly more silver, to appease foreign merchants.  They were only minted from 1873 to 1885.  These are not very common, and can command a nice price if in a higher grade.

Be careful.  These can and have been counterfeited.  I have seen one in an online auction with a date not in the range they were minted.  In fact, the date preceded the existence of the United States, so it could not have been any U. S. coin!

Canadian silver dollars are relatively easy to collect,  They are almost always appearing on eBay and Amazon.  Since many are affordable, the best way to collect them is to find those that are uncirculated.

Morgan Silver Dollars

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most highly coins in American numismatics.  The coins were minted at Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City.  To properly collect Morgans, a reference book showing details not ordinarily provided by other coin books is a must.  Look for key and semi-key dates, and die varieties.  Some rare coins are identified by specific markings from a die, such as a filled obscure cavity, and this could be the difference in a genuine piece or an altered piece.
