Trade Dollar

The Trade Dollar was produced from 1873 through 1885. This issue was not intended for circulation in the United States. The image of Liberty in a seated position is unique, and should not be confused with any other dollar. The Trade Dollar contains 0.7876 Troy ounce of silver, and a purity of silver of 0.900. This is slightly more silver than other silver dollars, and was minted to pay foreign merchants who had a problem with the silver content of other dollars. The Trade Dollar is difficult to find, and usually brings a high price. This, and unfamiliarity with the design by many collectors, makes it a target for counterfeiters. In one case I observed a Trade Dollar on eBay with a date clearly stamped on it that was from the wrong century! In fact, the date preceded the origins of the United States.

2013 William Howard Taft Dollar Coin

The official release date for the William Howard Taft dollar coin by the United States Mint is July 9. These coins are already available on eBay. So, why not just buy one from the mint? You cannot buy circulation presidential coins one at a time from the mint as individual coins. The release is for dollars with P and D mint marks in rolls, bags, and boxes.

Of course, the proof coin which is out and already available certified from grading services is the more desired coin.

Peace Dollars

In 1921, the Morgan Dollar was replaced with the Peace Dollar.  This series ended in 1935.  Since Peace Dollars were held my many who are not collectors, many were melted down during the years when silver soared over thirty years ago.  This means we can only go by the frequency they show up to guess at about how many survived.
