The “Dreaming” coins that are being produced in Australia are soon to become unavailable. These beautiful coins are rectangular, legal tender coins minted by the Australian government.  The 2008 coins are to cease production after March.

                 The coins are available for both the Dreaming Turtle and the Dreaming Kangaroo. They are being released on a “mint to order” basis, and the total mintages will be released after March. These unusual, must have in any collection, coins come in one-ounce silver and 2.5, 5, and 10 gram gold varieties.  These are difficult to find, only rarely appearing on such sites as E-bay. Pricing from the mint is reasonable, and we recommend the purchase of both the Turtle and the Kangaroo at the same time.

Australian Collectible Coins (Platinum, Gold, Silver, and more)

Australia has several series of incredibly beautiful coins that they mint concurrently.  Their coins have a great detail, and often are confused with proof coins.  They currently mint the Lunar series, Lunar series II, Kookaburras, Kangaroos, and Koalas.  In addition, they mint several painted series, one depicting wildlife and another depicting fire trucks from around the world.  Finally, consider the Birds of Australia series.

LUNAR SERIES:  The Lunar honors the Chinese zodiac, and is a 12 year series of coins that started in 1999 with the rabbit.  The 2010 tiger is already in early release, so collecting the series is possible.  It is available in silver coins ranging in size from one-half ounce to one kilogram, and gold coins of various sizes.  In addition, two special versions are available, the gilded coins in which the coin is silver with the zodiac symbol gilded in gold, and a kilogram coin with a diamond inserted into it.  The Perth mint still has back years for the two special series.

LUNAR SERIES II:  The second Lunar series has started in 2008, with the year of the mouse, and already the 2009 ox coin can be viewed on the Perth mint site.  The mouse can also be bought colorized.

KOOKABURRA:   The Kookaburra is the Australian bird, and an entire series of silver coins has been devoted to it.  This series began in 1990 and continues today.  The coins are available in various sizes, and the gilded coins are accompanied by a matching pin.  The half ounce is a square coin.

KANGEROO:  Another series in both gold and silver in the Kangaroo series.  This series is available in gold and silver.  The silver coins are generally high in value for a coin of their silver content.

KOALA:  The koala series of silver coins also continues today.  It is available in both silver and gilded coins.

BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA:  The Birds of Australia series started in 1989 with a kookaburra.  These coins come in attractive cases, and are silver coins, but not part of the Kookaburra series.  They differ in the purity of the silver and the size of the coins.
