America the Beautiful Quarter - Great Smoky Mountains National Partk

The United States Mint is scheduled to release the Great Smoky Mountain National Park three coin sets on February, giving people a chance to purchase quarters from all three mints at once. The image on the mint's website indicates one of the most impressive designs yet showing a rustic cabin, old fence, and bird in flight in the beauty of the Smoky Mountains.

2014 Official Alaska State Medallion

The 2014 Official Alaska State Medallion is the bull moose.  The collector version, the proof medallion, is numbered, and the quantity minted will be determined by the one year demand.  The medallion cannot be produced after that demand is met.

A proof-like medallion is also available.  These are less expensive, but do not command the same respect of collectors that the proof issues command.

Other issues of the medallion include the gold and the silver with gold, and the medallions come in various sizes.  In fact, sets containing multiple sized are also produced.

Below the listings may nclude the proof-like, and a variety of sizes and metals.

New Collectible Silver Coins from Canada at Face Value!

The Royal Canadian Mint has released the first of the two 100 for 100 silver coins for 2014, and the image for the other 100 for 100 coin to be released July, 2014.  These are real bargains as collectible coins, since the mint charges $100 for a coin with a face value of $100.  Yes, the coin can be spent in Canada for what you pay for it.  In fact, in the United States the conversion rate at this time makes the $100 Canadian dollars equivalent to slightly less than $100 in the United States.

These coins will contain 31.6 grams of 0.9999 fine silver each.  The first has a splendid image of an eagle flying over the wilderness, the second has a pair big horned sheep engaged in combat.

Mintage is 50,000 for each coin.

Unfortunately, only three can be ordered, and only for Canada and United States households.  Others will have to buy on a secondary market.

The 2013 issues both sold out, and the best way of ensuring your coins is to subscribe to the program.

And, the mint charges NO TAXES on these coins.  Normally, Canadians pay a tax on purchases but these are apparently exempt!

Why are proof and mint sets more valuable if sealed?

One interesting thing about proof sets and mint sets is they are worth more if they are sealed.  The reason is apparent, if there is an error coin in the set the discoverer makes money.  But, once the set is unsealed the value drops if there is no error coin.  This leads to the question, how often does a sealed set contain an error coin?  In other words, if a person buys a set with a known error, would the premium paid exceed the addition that person would pay for enough sealed sets to expect a great find?  And, buying a set with a known error allows one to determine which of several possible errors would be found.

Of course the thrill of discovery may give some entertainment value.

From a purely economic point of view this may be a waste of money.  It is not like getting a roll of coins at face value and conducting a search.  Coins do not lose value.  But, opened sets do.

You may have your own ideas about this, and you are entitled to your opinion.  Just remember, it is our money that will back your opinion.
