Square Kookaburra Coins

The square kookaburra coin was produced by the Perth Mint of Australia in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.  This coin was only minted in proof, on fine silver square blanks.

These coins are limited in availability, and draw a reasonable price when sold.  They are still affordable to mos collectors, but seem to be getting higher over time.

The images match the one ounce proof images for the years they were produced, which precede the specimen images by one year.

The coins were issued on mint cards, and a few were issued in sets with two other coins.  The sets are much rarer than the cards.

Only proof, fine silver square kookaburra coins were issued in those years.

Birds of Australia Coins

Currently the Perth Mint is releasing an astonishing set of Birds of Australia coins, featuring some incredible colorization of coins.  These coins are 1/2 ounce fine silver coins.

In the past the Royal Australian Mint issued a six coin Sterling silver set of Birds of Australia, accompanied by a great folder and a booklet.  This set was started in 1989 with the kookaburra, followed with a coin each year.  The issues in order are the kookaburra, the white cockatoo, the jabiru, the penguin, the cockatoo, and the wedge tailed eagle.  These coins were issued issued in standard proof form, 20 grams each, and in piedfort proof form, 40 grams.  Some come in special coin fair packaging.  It is also possible to find the entire set.

What is a piedfort coin?  It is a thicker than normal coin.

The piedfort coins are more rare, with much lower mintages than the standard coins.

Birds of Canada Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint has just released the 12th coin in its popular Birds of Canada series.  The Barn Owl joins 11 other spectacular coins as Canada continues this great series.  These coins are coming out at a rate of 2 coins per year, and are beautifully colorized quarters.  These base metal coins start out very affordable for collectors, but older issues have gone to lofty prices.

The coins are over-sized so a larger colorful image can be achieved.

The series started with two coins issued in 2007, the red-breasted nuthatch and the ruby-throated hummingbird, and continued in 2008 with the downy woodpecker and the northern cardinal.

The series appeared to be over in 2009, then resumed in 2010 with the goldfinch and the blue jay.

The 2011 coins are the black-capped chickadee and the barn swallow.  The 2012 coins are the rose-breasted grosbeak and the evening grosbeak.  Finally, the 2013 coins are the American Robin and the Barn Owl.

Coin Scales

One of the problems with present day coin collecting is the influx of counterfeit coins, many from China.  Some are quite good, except getting the weight right still causes the counterfeiters a problem.  Weighing a coin is always a good idea, especially when buying from an unknown dealer.

Fortunately, scales exist, and the weights of coins are included in good books such as the ones shown below.  You may need to convert units from grams to ounces or from ounces to grams.

A Guidebook of United States Coins 2014: The Official Red Book

2014 North American Coins & Prices: A Guide to U.S., Canadian and Mexican Coins (North American Coins and Prices)

Many people know these books can be used for prices, but the weights and dimensions of coins are also important.

So, what if you are going to a coin show, how do you weigh a coin?  Bring a small scale with you. And this will keep you from paying for the wrong amount of a precious metal coin.  Use a ;arger scale at home.
