Lunar Series Coins from the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint made one complete series of Lunar Coins, and is now on Series II.  The silver and the gold coins use different images, and series II is different from series I.

The silver series and the gold series started at different times, so three silver issues were released in a single year.  Now, the series are synchronized.

Both the silver series and the gold series have colorized versions, where the coins are covered with enamel from the mint.

There is a silver version that is gilded with 24-kt gold to highlight parts of the coins.

The really special coins are the 10-kg silver coins that are colorized, and have jewels inserted as eyes.  Series I used only diamonds, but series II uses various gemstones, giving each coin an appropriately colored insert.

This is the colorized series II rabbit with the jewel eye.  This image is from the Perth Mint.

Silver Dollar Coins

Gold Kangaroo Bars

Gold coins are of known purity and weight, so they are usually preferred to bars, but they take up more space than bars.  Now, the Perth Mint is producing gold bars, with the integrity of the Perth Mint backing the purity and weight.  This appears to be a solution to the storage problem, while maintaining important features of gold coins.

The Isle of Man Cat Series of coins has been quite popular, but one thing is very important, make certain it is a silver coin if that is what you want.  Look for the one ounce fine silver, or i ounce Ag on fine silver coins.  Some mints make base metal coins and silver coins that look much alike.  Gold is sometimes referred to as Au.

Official Alaska State Medallions

The 2013 Official Alaska State Medallion is the Ptarmigan, Alaska's state bird.

The Official Alaska State Medallions are minted only in sufficient quantity to meet the demand in a given year.  The image is Alaskian wildlife, and changes annually.  The image used is the winning image of an art contect, open only to Alaska residents, and by state statue cannot be used after the year ends.

All Official Alaska State Medallions has the State Seal on one side.  This does not determine the authenticity, since that same seal is used by the Alaska Mint, a private mint, on other products.

Be certain to obtain the proof version.  It is the one that has historically been very limited in mintage.

2012 Neuschwanstein Castle Commemorative Coin

Bayern, Deutschland is the setting for a beautiful, 2 Euro commemorative coin.  Neuschwanstein Castle is a castle in Germany, or Deutschland.  This coin is affordable if you can find it.

I appreciate this one greatly.  Some of my ancestors came from Germany, and , in particular, Bavaria.

This coin is colorized.  I hope you find it as interesting as I have, if you can find one.  Unfortunately, this is not a coin we stock at Black Spaniel Gallery Coins.

I see several page clicks from Germany, so I thought I would include this description.  Otherwise, some people would not know this one exists.

There is also a bicolor coin, which is not as nice.  It is also a 2 Euro coin.

New Issues from the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint is releasing seven new coins.  The information we have says shipping starts May 14.

The main attraction is the hologram silver maple leaf.  This one is Maple of Peace, and features a highly decorated elephant with the holographic maple leaf in the center.  This is to celebrate Chinese Canadian history and traditions.

To commemotate the historic battle of the War of 1812, a five ounce gold coin depicts the HMS Shannon and the USS Chesapeake.

A colorized cupronickel coin honoring Her Magesty Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation is an affordable keepsake for the occasion.

There are two issues of the Butterflies of Canada:  Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, one in fine silver and the other silver plated.

The other two coins are fine silver issues, one Summertime Fun and the other Fishing.

For even more coins check our website at Black Spaniel Gallery

Monday, May 6, 2013

The Perth Mint’s May 7th release includes gold and silver coins, and a coin and stamp set. Let’s get to the two wonderful coin series.

One is Forest Babies, which included three colorized silver coins. The subjects of these half-ounce fine silver coins are the Red Squirrel, the Brown Bear, and the Grey Wolf. These are sold individually, or can be bundled. It appears the entire series may have been released all at once.

The half-ounce silver Rainbow Lorikeet is another issue in the Birds of Australia Series.

Yes, there are also gold coins.

But, the one we are really excited about is the first coin of the Treasures of the World Series. This coin has garnets enclosed in a window, a technique used in the Treasures of Australia Series. The first coin is Europe, and features an alpine scene with a quaint cottage. This is a highly recommended coin.

Finally, the proof Kookaburra is out. We will stock the Forest Babies and the Treasures of the World – Europe coins in limited number later this month. Watch our website for their arrival.

View the images on our home page.

Protect Your Coins from Damage

Coins can be damaged from physical contact or from the environment.  There are many products that help protect your coins, but some do a better job than others.

The best protection comes from a transparent barrier against contact.  Contact damage can be abrasions or from films of liquid.

Environmental protection requires air tight seals against polluted air, which can be any air.

Flip holders and 2 X 2 holders help, but s properly fitting capsule may be a real good choice.  Properly fitting is important, since you do not want your coins sliding about in the capsule.  When multiple sizes are needed, capsules can be paired with washers that are sold with them.

Click the link above, and select capsules, or browse any other topic from the list, including coin books.
We cannot guarantee no damage will occur, but we like capsules.  Most of our coins that we sell come in capsules from the mint, so we have little experience with the other options.  You should use what you feel is best.

Australian Map Shaped Coin Series

Some time back Australia's Perth Mint produced a silver coin in the shape of the map of Australia for a trade expo with China. Now, realizing a great success with that coin, a new series has been launched, The Australian Map Shaped Coin Series, in fine silver. These colorized coins have an image over the map. The Kangaroo is the third coin in the series, and was an immediate sell out. The next coin is planned, but the first three are no longer available from the mint. Check our website for the Kangaroo.

Austria Finishes the Coin Series Commemorating Rome at the Danube

Rome expanded its empire, but for many years stopped at the Danube.  The inhabitants across the Danube were skilled at sword making, among other things, so a peaceful relationship existed for many years with the Romans buying superior swords from the locals.  The Austrian Mint has now finished its three year, six coin silver 20 Euro coin series commemorating the Romans at the Danube.  On the obverse of each coin is a different Roman emperor or other significant figure, while an image honoring the location appears on the reverse.

The coins are:
Reverse, Virunum; Obverse, Claudius
Reverse, Vindobona; Obverse, Marcus Aurilius
Reverse, Carnuntum, Obverse, Septimus Severus
Reverse, Aguntum; Obverse, Constantius II
Reverse, Lauriacum; Obverse Saint Florian
Reverse, Brigantium; Obverse, Valentinian
