Tuvalu Coins

Tuvalu is a small sovereign nation located between Hawaii and Australia. Its current currency is the dollar, and both its own dollars and Australian dollars are in circulation. The value of the Tuvalu dollar is kept at the value of the Australian dollar.

Like other small nations, Tuvalu authorizes collectible coins to be struck. It uses other countries for minting, with the Australian Perth Mint making many of these coins. The collectivity of the Tuvalu coins is maintained by having very limited mintages, and minting short series that are issued over a short time. The coins are generally housed in attractive cases and each is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The metal of choice is usually fine silver, and many of the coins are enhanced by selective colorization.

One stand alone coin that attracted attention is the 2009 Barbie coin. This coin was minted in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Barbie doll. It comes in a pink case, and makes an excellent addition to any Barbie collection.
