Silver Nickels

In 1942 the nickel coin was replaced with a silver version, due to the nickel being needed for World War II.  The change lasted through 1945.  Eleven coins were struck in this short series, including coins from the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints.

In 1942 the first coins struck were not silver.  The change occurred during the year.

Silver five cent coins are obvious due to the large mint marks on the reverse above the dome. They neither match the smaller mintmarks in size or location, and the Philadelphia, which used no mint mark at the time, minted coins with a P.

Uncirculated coins are affordable, and quality should be easily found for most of the series.
