Authenticating Coins

Sending a coin for grading will authenticate it.  Counterfeit and altered coins are easily spotted by the experts.  But, this is expensive.

When buying rare coins, often they will all have been made from a single die or a handful of dies.  Coin dies are not perfect.  A small crack in a certain letter, or a minor filling of the die causing a small missing section of a letter are normal.  These may be small for finding without a magnifier.  Look for special die errors when authenticating a rare coin with magnification.

But, how would you know what to look for?  There are books that handle this.  No, the Red Book in the last post is not going to help here.  Buy a special book for this type of scrutiny.
