High Relief Coins

High relief coins, sometimes called piedford coins, are coins with very detailed images.  This is achieved by using a smaller coin than otherwise would be used, but making up the difference with thickness.  Often the image is set on a slightly concave surface to keep the image from wearing, but since these are not to be handled it is nnot really necessary.

The Perth Mint is currently producing high relief kangaroo fine silver coins.  These are stunning one Troy ounce issues.

This image is from the Perth Mint.

The Royal Australian Mint also produces silver kangaroo coins, but not the high relief coins.  These are Perth Mint products.  Both mints make Australian coins, but more of the commemorative, or collectible coins are from the Perth Mint.  However, a significant number of commemorative coins does come from the Royal Australian Mint.  Only the Royal Australian Mint produces circulation coins for australia, while the Perth Mint is the primary source of most Australian bullion coins.
