Our Recommendation for a Coin Book

For United States coins it is the Red Book, United States Coins.

The above is an image from Amazon, and this book, along with many others, can be found at

http://blackspanielgallery.com/coinbookssupplies.html

The layout is excellent, the coins issued are there, and it is good for mintages.  Images are included for coin types, with images showing many varieties that exist.

This book has useful information at the beginning.

Such things as California Gold pieces are included.

Colonial coinage is included.

Guidelines for grading are there, but do leave grading for the experts.  However, you may be able to protect yourself if someone over-grades a coin.

What you will not find is Confederate coinage, anything paper such as fractional currency, and current prices for bullion coins.  Bullion changes, so prices change.

Older issues are available, and there is an interest in them.  Collectors frequently like to compare what a coin was worth with what it is worth.

The Blue Book is also good, but much thinner, with less information.  You would find different prices.  Why?  One is what you expect to pay (Blue Book), and the other is what a dealer will pay you (Red Book).  Collectors usually value collections based on these books, especially if they need the information for insurance purposes.

Prices change regularly, and dealers update frequently, so never be srprised if the book is no longer accurate.  Notice the 2014 edition is out in early 2013.  In a year these prices will be out of date.

Special editions:  The Red Book comes in large print and spiral bound.  These are also available at the link above.  The spiral bound stayes open while you look at your coins.  The large print is for those of us who need larger print.
