Fractional Currency

The Civil War used large quantities of metal.  This resulted in insufficient metal for coinage, so the government introduced Fractional Currency, small paper bills with denominations ranging from three cents to fifty cents.  Spencer M. Clark used his own image, having received no image for the new currency design, which eventually led to the law that no living person would appear on United States currency.  These bills were issued in the period ranging from 1862 into 1876.  The bills were made of rag paper, and often have large spots in them, where pieces of the rags can be seen.

These are quite collectible, and high quality bolls can be worth quite a bit.
